How does Waypoint authenticate users? Do you store my password?
Users (teachers, students) logging into Waypoint from a Learning Management System like Blackboard or eCollege use a single-sign on (SSO) based on the OAuth standard. This is the same standard Google uses. Waypoint users can also create Waypoint credentials, to make it easier to login to Waypoint directly or to provision users who may not have access to the institution's LMS.
Single-Sign On:
When users log into Waypoint from another system a new user account is created. Since there is a trust relationship between Waypoint an the system (often Blackboard or eCollege) that is sending the user to Waypoint, a password is not required and no passwords are stored in Waypoint's database. No Waypoint team member will ever ask you for a password to any account.
Direct Login to Waypoint:
Users can create Waypoint credentials by using the "forgot password" process found on their institution's Waypoint login page. Here's how to create a password:
- Once logged into Waypoint via single-sign on (from Blackboard or eCollege), click your name in the top right of the Waypoint page,
- Select Log Off.
- Click Log On to see the space for a username and password.
- Click Forgot Password.
- Enter your username - the same username you would use to log into your LMS -OR- a username provided to you for use with Waypoint.
