Using Waypoint with Canvas
Before you begin using Waypoint with Canvas, you need to have the following:
- Access to the Canvas LMS
- Waypoint Analytics License
Once you have these two things, and you have configured Waypoint with a Consumer Key and Consumer Secret, you may begin linking Canvas courses and assignments to Waypoint.
Creating Your Canvas Course
After logging into Canvas, you can connect Waypoint to an existing course or create a new course. For new courses, log into Canvas and follow these steps:
- Click on the "Start a New Course" button on the right-side
- Enter the course name and select the "Make course publicly visible" check-box
- Click the "Create course" button to create and save your new course
With a new course or existing course, follow these steps to manually insert the Waypoint app and begin utilizing the interactive Waypoint Rubrics:
- Enter the course and click on "Settings" from the left-hand menu
- Next, click on the "Apps" tab
- Click the "View App Configurations" button, then "Add New App"
- Enter "Waypoint Outcomes" as the name and the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret you created for your Waypoint instance under the Settings page
- Next, enter your Waypoint SSO URL within the URL field
- For example: https://university.waypointoutcomes.com/sso
- Enter your Waypoint instance's URL within the Domain field
- For example: https://university.waypointoutcomes.com
- For Privacy, you have the following choices. Each choice will determine what type of user information is shared/transferred to Waypoint.
- Anonymous - No e-mail or names (first and last)
- E-Mail Only - E-mail only, no names (first and last)
- Name Only - Name only (first and last), no e-mail Public - Both e-mail and names (first and last)
- Click the "Submit" button to create and save the Waypoint app connection
Creating A Waypoint Assignment
Once the Waypoint app has been installed within your course, create a new assignment - which you will link to a Waypoint Rubric - to begin collecting student work for assessment.
- Click on "Assignments" from the left-hand menu
- Next, click on "Add an assignment"
- Enter the name and any other information you feel is relevant
- From the "type" drop-down, select "External Tool"
- Next, click on the "More options" button
- Locate the "External Tool URL" field and click inside it
- Click on "Waypoint Outcomes" or manually enter your Waypoint SSO URL
- For example: https://university.waypointoutcomes.com/sso
- It is recommended to click the "Load this tool in a new tab" checkbox. Otherwise, Waypoint will embed within your Canvas interface when users click on the assignment's name.
- Click the "Select" button to save these settings
- Lastly, click on the "Update Assignment" button to create and save the Waypoint assignment
Once the Waypoint assignment has been created, if you have opted to click the "Load this tool in a new tab" checkbox, click on its name and then click the "Load Waypoint Outcomes in a new window" button to attach a Waypoint Rubric to it. Please note: if you did not enter "Waypoint Outcomes" as the App name during the initial app configuration, this link will instead display the language you entered.
Linking A Waypoint Rubric To Your Assignment
After entering Waypoint, create a Rubric to attach to your assignment. Find instructions for creating Waypoint Rubrics here.
Once you have created a Waypoint Rubric, complete the following steps to link a Waypoint Rubric:
- Click on the "Design" tab and then choose "Course Definitions"
- Locate your course and click on its name
- From the "Course Assignments" tab, locate your assignment name and hover over the "Actions" button on the right-hand side
- Select "Link Rubrics" from the drop-down
- Find the rubric you wish to attach to the assignment and click on the ">" button to move it under the "You Selected" area
- Click on the "Use Selected" button to attach the rubric to your assignment
Collecting Student Work
With students enrolled into your course, they can follow these steps to submit their work through Waypoint, allowing you to begin assessment:
- Log into Canvas and enter the course containing Waypoint assignments
- Click on "Assignments" from the left-hand menu
- Next, click on the assignment's name and then click the "Load Waypoint Outcomes in a new window" button
- Once in Waypoint, students can follow the instructions, found here, for submitting their work
Assessing Student Work and Returning Feedback
As your course assignment collects student work, you can use the Waypoint Rubrics to create rich assessment by following the instructions found here.
Once you have assessed student work, you can return your feedback to the Grades area in Canvas. Find instructions for returning assessment feedback here.
